Expedition Antarctica Antarctic Animals and Wildlife
Penguins, orcas, leopard seals, and badge-worthy encounters
Wildlife on the expedition map
Expedition Antarctica by Playduo Studio scatters living set dressing and a few interactive animals across Base Camp, the Ross Ice Shelf, camps, and Explorer’s Cove. Most creatures are decorative atmosphere — proof you are on a polar trek — but a handful grant badges, consumables, or surprising health hits. This guide separates safe photo ops from the encounters that actually change a run.
Animals never replace energy and water planning. A backpack penguin gift will not save a dry push from Camp 3 to 4. Use wildlife as bonus efficiency and badge progress tracked on Exploration badges and the Badge checklist.
Penguins and baby penguins
Adult and baby penguins wander near Base Camp expedition camps, the Ross Ice Shelf, and later camp areas (community notes often cite Camp 3 and Camp 4 spawn pockets). Baby penguins sometimes spawn beside adults — expect one to three chicks when a family group appears. During some Halloween windows penguins wore wizard hats with glowing eyes; treat seasonal skins as temporary cosmetics, not new mechanics.
Penguins do not block Standard route red poles. Walk around them on ladders and ice bridges so you do not mis-jump while staring at chicks.
Backpack penguins
Backpack penguins are rarer spawns in the same general penguin zones, most commonly reported on the Ross Ice Shelf. Interact once per penguin: community rates describe a high chance of an energy bar and a small chance of a few hundred coins. First interaction historically awards the A Kind Penguin style badge (wording may match your badge list). You only receive one gift per backpack penguin — do not camp the same NPC hoping for infinite rolls.
If you are grinding coins and rewards, backpack penguins are a nice side loot, not a farming loop. Keep moving toward your pinned mission.
Medic penguins
Medic penguins are the rarest helpful variant. Interactions usually restore health; a minority of rolls may grant a health bottle instead. Treat them as emergency top-ups after a fall that did not wipe you — then still refill properly at the next camp using the Camp refill checklist.
Orcas
Orcas swim near Base Camp waters. They do not attack explorers and exist for atmosphere. Do not dive into freezing roleplay water chasing screenshots if your hydration timer is already critical — finish the photo after you stock bottles.
Leopard seals and Explorer’s Cove
Leopard seals appear in Explorer’s Cove. Colliding with a seal’s head can cut a chunk of health (community notes cite about 10%) and historically awards the Ouch! badge. Before hunting Ouch:
- Secure a checkpoint at Camp 2 so a drown or wipe does not erase hours of progress.
- Carry surplus water — cove swimming is not a refill station.
- Approach carefully; you want the badge collision, not a full wipe before Camp 2 to 3.
Pair cove visits with Easter eggs sightseeing only when bottles allow. Aqua Jet from the Elite Pack helps cove traversal if you already own that pass — it is optional, not required for Ouch.
Badge and exploration synergy
Animal badges sit beside vista and lore badges on Exploration badges. Stack a penguin interaction day with light Abandoned routes scouting so one expedition evening covers multiple curiosity goals. Event years sometimes add costume penguins — re-check Updates events when Halloween or LEGO windows return.
Safety and etiquette
Do not body-block backpack penguins while a queue of players waits. Call “medic penguin at shelf” in group chat if your squad needs heals. Never use Scripts to teleport onto animal badges — moderation risk and invalid runs. There are no animal codes.

Solo photo route suggestion
Base Camp orcas → Ross Ice Shelf penguin sweep → Camp 2 checkpoint → Explorer’s Cove Ouch attempt → return for refill → resume Standard route. Abort the cove if storms spike per Storms and weather.
Group wildlife nights
Assign one spotter for backpack penguins while others hold rope anchors. Guide role callers should keep the expedition goal primary — wildlife is a side quest. Search and Rescue is useful if cove swimmers disconnect mid-badge attempt.
Myths to ignore
Penguins do not unlock Advanced routes. Orcas do not grant free Robux. Leopard seals are not farmable for infinite coins. Fake “animal code” lists belong on the same trash pile as other codes myths. Trust in-game interactions and this wiki’s Updates hub when spawn rates shift after patches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Expedition Antarctica questions.
Where do backpack penguins spawn?
In general penguin zones — Base Camp approaches, Ross Ice Shelf (most common reports), and select later camps. Interact once for a gift and possible Kind Penguin badge; see [Exploration badges](/badges/exploration-badges/).
How do I get the Ouch badge?
Collide with a leopard seal in Explorer's Cove after securing a [Camp 2](/routes/camps-and-landmarks/) checkpoint. Expect a health hit — bring surplus water and read [Falling and climbing](/guides/falling-and-climbing/) if the approach involves awkward jumps.
Do animals attack on the Standard route?
Main [Standard route](/routes/standard-route/) penguins and Base Camp orcas are safe. The dangerous collision is the Explorer's Cove leopard seal. Keep primary focus on [Energy and water](/guides/energy-and-water/).
Can medic penguins replace camp refills?
No. They are emergency top-ups. Always refill at camps with the [Camp refill checklist](/tools/camp-refill-checklist/) before long segments like [Camp 3 to 4](/routes/camp-3-to-4/).
Does Elite Pack help with animals?
Aqua Jet from [Elite Pack](/gamepasses/elite-pack/) helps Explorer's Cove traversal, but Ouch and penguin badges do not require the pack. Compare value on [Worth buying](/gamepasses/worth-buying/).
